Today (Monday) was my first day of Spanish School. I walked into the school and after waiting a little vit, everyone met their teachers. My teacher is un hombre se llama Nicolas (or Nicotu to his friends and students). He is 30 years old and is from San Pedro. I really like him and I know I am going to learn a lot. Already after the first day, I have the alphabet memorized, and I introduced myself to the entire group telling them who I was, how I was and where I was from. We took about the first 40 minutes getting to know each other. I took 3-4 pages of notes during our 4 hour class and then studied after class for an additional 1-1.5 hours.
The school is really nice. Here are some photos.
One interesting things I have noticed is that on all of the rooves, including the schools roof, they leave the rebar sticking out. It looks like something that someone would fall onto in a Die Hard movie. I learned the reason they do this is so they can continue to build another level when and if they have the money. Most people dont have much property and so after they build on the property they have, they can only continue to build upward.
So far, I think the family is a great match for us and I like them a lot. The food Maria cooks is delicious! Breakfast - fresh cut papaya, watermelon, pineapple and pancakes. For lunch we had steamed veggies - cauliflower, broccoli, peppers with grilled tofu, onions and soy sauce. Dinner - Huevos Jiervas or eggs with herbs... wilted chard, grilled onions & sweet peppers, tomatoes mixed with scrambled eggs... along with black beans, rice, bread and queso fresco.
yesterday we walked into the house and after using the bathroom, I went to wash my hands. I had soap all over my hands and i went to turn on the water but nothing came out. So we went downstairs and turned on all the other faucets and yet, no water. We did see a bucket of water that looked clean sitting in the sink, so we poured some of that over my hands to wash. Later we learned that the water comes every Monday and they have to fill up a barrel or huge container by each sink. Then we use a small bowl to scoop out the water to use for washing.
It was interesting after I went #3... I tried to flush, but there was no water to flush... you can imagine, Im sure. So I came downstairs and told my mom that I had a problem. We went back upstairs and she showed me how to fill the back of the toilet with water from a bucket so it would flush. Thank goodness this morning the barrels and toilet were filled!
Highs: My class with Nicolas, the food and no more #3!!!
Lows: My nose is peeling from my sunburn.
