Day 2 - San Pedro, Guatemala

Highs:
Everything today was great. 1) I LOVED the food. I went to an Irish Pub called The Clover and had chicken sate with fries, salad, peanut sauce and ginger ale. 2) It was clear out today and I could see all across the lake and it was a beautiful view!

3) Experiences in San Pedro:  Today, pretty much all we did, was walk around the town getting to know it.  visited the Spanish School Cooperative where I will be studying next week and its REALLY nice... we finally got there after passing it twice without seeing it. Mynor, the director there, is taking us to see Erick, at Ericks house tomorrow night and I am really excited about that.

There are little stores all over the place selling candy and snacks, half the time, run by people younger than I am. I have also fallen in love with this kind of Lime Tortilla chips called Tortrix- Limon... yummm. Oh yeah, I had fresh, hand squeezed, orange juice today for $5 quetzals which is like 64 cents.

Everybody who I have talked to with my very basic communication skills have been very nice and pleasant.

Finally, I feel like all the stereotypes about Guatemala (at least here in San Pedro) are very untrue regarding safety issues. I feel safer here than I do in Seattle - everyone says 'hola' or 'buenas" when they walk by. It feels really nice.

Lows:  None.

Things I learned:
1- Handshaking with a firm grip is considered a sign of dominance, so you shake hands very gently (it might be different in the city, but its true here.)
2 - Only the oldest men of San Pedro wear their traditional 'trajes' (suits) and the rest of the men wear regular jeans and t-shirts. Almost all, like every girl or woman I saw, wore their traditional San Pedro skirt, apron and shirt. I dont know why the women have stayed traditional and the men havent. When i find out I will post it.

Best Photos of the day:
Pic 1 is at the Cooperative Spanish School overlooking Lk Atitlan
Pic 2 is at Clover eating dinner
Pic 3 is an awesome garden in an empty lot next to my hotel.
