We loaded into the airport shuttle this morning at 2:55AM, arrived in
Anchorage at 8:45AM and finally settled into The Days Inn about 10:00AM.
Overall, my first impressions of Anchorage are:
From the airplane I thought the mountains were unique and beautiful. They were brown, black, grey and red all mixed together.
On the ground it wasn't what I thought it would be. I thought it would be snowy, but it wasn't at all. Also, it was sunny and I was sweating but everything I touched was cold (well, it was only 9:00AM...)
The hotel is great. The shuttle is free and it's near lots of good restaurants. I think it would be better if it had two TVs in the room :)... but they do have cable, the beds are really comfortable, and it's extremely clean.
After a rest at the hotel and a good breakfast at the Country Kitchen, we walked a mile to the nearest grocery story for food supplies.
We were walking by a cemetery and noticed that a lot of the gravestones were really old... from the late 1800s. Next to a few of the trees were some mushrooms. They had bright red bells and small tan circles on them. The stems were thick and white as a cloud. I wonder what they are called. I'll research it and report back.
Tomorrow I'm looking forward to seeing lots of glaciers!
